Understanding Eating Disorders (EDB)

Eating Disorders (EDB) are a complex problem, having a significant impact on the physical and mental health of individuals who suffer from them.

Much more than simple concerns about food, EDs encompass a range of behaviors closely linked to body image, self-esteem and emotions, which can be similar to addictive behaviors.

Various manifestations of Eating Disorders:

EDs manifest across a variety of disorders, of which anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, and binge-eating disorder are the most prevalent.

However, other disorders such as aesthetic sport addiction, selective eating, orthorexia, pica and merycism are also identified, each presenting distinct symptoms.

Identify red flags

Recognizing the signs upstream of EDs is important to prevent and make support as effective as possible.

There is generally significant dysmorphophobia. It is the fact of having a vision of your body that is very far from reality and which creates complexes with behaviors that are inappropriate for your health.

We may find an obsession (even moderate) with regard to food and physical appearance, unusual eating rituals (compulsive or restrictive) or hormonal disorders.

We can also rely on physical symptoms such as tiredness, dizziness, as well as weight variations.

It is always a good idea to see a doctor if you have symptoms to get a serious diagnosis.

Potential consequences

The consequences of ED can be more or less devastating:

Physically: they can lead to heart problems, electrolyte imbalances, gastrointestinal disorders, dehydration and even hair loss.

Mentally: EDs are associated with emotional distress, mood disorders, anxiety, depression, and even suicidal thoughts.

Who is concerned?

The origins of EDs are multifactorial, which can be influenced by biological, psychological, social and environmental factors.

These disorders can affect individuals of all ages, genders and ethnicities, and are often associated with family history, social pressures, emotional disorders or trauma.
